BARLEY The main grain used in beer making, usually after malting.
BARLEY WINE A very strong beer.
BARREL To the commercial breweries, a barrel holds 162 litres (36 gallons). For home beermaking, a barrel holds 22.5 litres (5 gallons)
BITTER A clear well hopped beer.
BOTTLING A way of storing beer that can easily be dispensed. NEVER USE NON-RETURNABLE BOTTLE. Only use “deposit” returnable bottles or plastic PET bottles.
BOTTOM FERMENTING A strain of lager yeast that ferments at the bottom of the bucket under lower temperatures.
BREWBIN A bucket that the beer ferments in.
BREWERS YEAST Beer yeast is usually top fermenting and is used for beers and ales.
BRIGHT BEER A term used to describe a beer that is completely free from cloudiness or hazes and is perfectly clear.
BROWN ALE A medium strength dark mild beer that is sweeter than bitter and is usually bottled.
BURNT SUGAR An old name for caramel colouring.
